About Our Lung Center
You can breathe easier knowing that the Lung Team at Riverview is on your side.
The team comes together at the comprehensive Lung Center at Riverview to provide expert, collaborative and personalized care for patients with lung disease.
The Team Approach
At Riverview, a multidisciplinary team of pulmonologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and cardiothoracic surgeons meets regularly to consult on optimal treatment strategies for their patients.
This team approach provides clinical expertise from multiple specialties, culminating in a collaborative plan that provides the best course of action for the patient. As a team, physicians can develop treatment plans that include advanced surgical procedures, radiation therapy, medical oncology, clinical trials, and pharmaceuticals to address the individual needs of the patient.
The Lung Team has access to some of the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies available today.
Technologies such as PET/CT and SuperDimension allow physicians to diagnose lung disease at a much earlier stage. While treatment options such as the CyberKnife® System allow physicians to treat disease that would previously have been untreatable, also at an earlier stage.
The Diagnostic Imaging Center at Riverview is home to some of the most advanced technologies to diagnose lung disease at the earliest stages.
- PET/CT: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computerized Tomography (CT) are standard imaging tools which allow clinicians to pinpoint the location of cancer within the body before making treatment recommendations. Alone each test has its limitations, combined the PET/CT provides the most complete information on cancer location and metabolic activity.
- SuperDimension: inReach Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy, a minimally invasive technology that allows your doctor to take tissue samples from the lung earlier and potentially more safely than traditional bronchoscopy. The technology works similar to GPS (Global Positioning System) technology, creating a three-dimensional virtual "roadmap" of your lungs from your CT-Scan that enables your doctor to steer a unique set of inReach catheters through the lungs to reach the targeted lesion(s) in a minimally invasive manner. This technology may help us diagnose many patients at a much earlier stage in the development of their lung cancer. Diagnosis of a Stage I or Stage II lesion can lead to an 88% survival rate of ten years while diagnosis in Stage III or Stage IV may only lead to a life expectancy of approximately six months.
The Booker Cancer Center houses the most powerful and precise tools in the fight against cancer, including: IMRT, IGRT, and CyberKnife Stereotactic Robotic Radiosurgery.
- CyberKnife Center at Riverview: As a non-invasive surgical approach to treating cancer, tumors and lesions throughout the body, the CyberKnife System has revolutionized the way physicians treat patients especially those previously considered inoperable. The XSight Lung Tracking System provides a completely non-invasive treatment alternative for medically inoperable lung cancer patients.
