DIEP Flap Procedure
About the DIEP Flap Procedure
At Riverview, breast reconstruction is more than skin deep. It's skin DIEP.
The DIEP flap surgery procedure is increasingly becoming a preferred method of reconstruction for women who undergo mastectomy. It is the most advanced and natural form of breast reconstruction available to patients.
For years, this procedure has only been performed at large academic medical centers. Riverview is one of the first community medical centers in the nation to offer this natural and advanced option to women in New Jersey.
How does it work?
A small incision is made in the abdomen and the surgeon dissects the skin, tissue, and perforators — also know as the flap. Then using microsurgery, the surgeon transfers excess tissue from the woman's abdomen and transplants the living tissue to create a new breast without compromising or removing the abdominal muscle.
For women undergoing mastectomy, the DIEP flap surgery provides unique benefits. There is no need for artificial implants. And, since the tissue comes from the woman's abdomen, many women have results similar to a tummy tuck.
How is DIEP flap surgical procedure different than the TRAM flap?
The DIEP flap surgery is very similar to the TRAM flap procedure however, there is a significant difference. The abdominal muscles are not compromised or sacrificed, keeping a woman's core strong, so she can remain active. Additionally, there is less pain postoperatively.
