What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional radiology involves the diagnosis as well as treatment of diseases. Using imaging techniques to guide them, interventional radiologists thread narrow tubes (catheters) and other very small instruments through the blood vessels and other pathways of the body to the site of the problem. Many interventional radiology techniques can be used to successfully treat a range of medical conditions that may have previously required surgery. Additionally, interventional radiology procedures rarely require general anesthesia or hospitalization, and often involve less pain and smaller incisions that traditional surgery.

Primary procedures include, but are not limited to:

•  Port insertions
•  Uterine Artery (fibroid) Embolization
•  Nephrostomy tube insertion
•  Biliary drainage
•  Embolization
•  Paracentesis
•  Thoracentesis
•  Biopsies
•  Arthrogram
