MILD Procedure

MILD (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression) is a safe and therapeutic option for the treatment of chronic back pain, as a result of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), and Riverview Medical Center is the only hospital in the region to offer it.

MILD for the treatment of LSS
More than one million people are diagnosed and treated annually in the United States for LSS, a condition that occurs from the narrowing of the spinal canal in which the nerves become compressed. The condition is primarily caused by aging and degeneration of the spine as well as growth of bones and ligaments. LSS often causes pain in the back that continues down into the legs while walking short distances or even standing in place.

How MILD works
Unlike some treatments that only temporarily relieve symptoms associated with LSS, MILD uses a special device that eliminates the compression around the spinal canal with ultra-minimally invasive technology.

Under light sedation the physician makes an incision just 5mm in diameter. Using special tools overgrowth of bone and ligaments are removed, sparing any cutting of tissue.

MILD advantages are numerous. Performed in an outpatient setting, the procedure is an alternative to open spine surgery, and is an especially good option for older patients. With reduced pain and improved mobility, recovery time is shorter than other surgical procedures for treating LSS, and most people return to work and other normal daily tasks within a few days.
