Center for Robotic Surgery at Riverview Medical Center

About Our Center

At Hackensack Meridian Health Riverview Medical Center, robotic assisted surgery is revolutionizing the way physicians operate on patients with certain gynecologic, urologic, colorectal, thoracic, and general conditions. Our physicians use the da Vinci® Xi and Si Surgical Systems, which allows them to create small incisions associated with traditional laparoscopic surgery, but with improved visualization and range of motion.

In addition, Riverview has acquired a Mako System, a robotic-arm that allows surgeons to personalize the surgical experience, tailoring it to patients’ needs and anatomy. The Mako system will be used in Robotic-arm assisted partial and total knee replacement surgeries.

What is Robotic Surgery?

Robotically-assisted surgery entails the use of a surgical robot to facilitate the performance of complex operations without the need for a large incision. By combining robotics and state-of-the-art computer technology, surgeons can operate with greater dexterity and controls than with traditional surgical approaches.

Patient Benefits

In addition to a faster and easier recovery for patients, other potential benefits of robotic surgery include:

  • Less post-operative pain and a significantly minimized need for opioids
  • Smaller incisions with less scarring for improved cosmetic results
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Shorter length of post-operative hospital stay
  • An expedited return to daily activities

How the da Vinci® Surgical System Works

When using the daVinci system, surgeons sit in a console that provides a three-dimensional view of their operating field. Below the screen, they work the master controls that guide the robotic arms, which manipulate the instruments and insert a tiny camera that enables them to see inside the patient. The surgical robot is unique because it provides greater magnification, a three-dimensional view, and instrument arms that allow for more freedom and movements that mimic a human wrist.

Although seated in a console a few feet from the patient, the surgeon views an actual image of the surgical-field while operating real time. The system replicates the surgeon’s movements and cannot make decisions on its own or make any maneuver’s without the surgeon’s input.
