Research & Clinical Trials
The Booker Cancer Center at Riverview Medical Center is affiliated with the renowned Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. This relationship gives our adult patients access to more than 60 clinical trials. We also participate in trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and by several pharmaceutical companies. Currently, we are involved in 52 active clinical trials. Our Center has been actively involved in clinical trials since 1995 and to date, more than 350 patients have been enrolled in our trials.
In addition, Booker Cancer Center is participating in the STAR (Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene) trial — one of the largest breast cancer prevention trials ever initiated, and the SELECT trial for prostate cancer. The Booker Cancer Center also has the distinction of being a member of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), a leader in defining more effective cancer therapies. Through its membership, Riverview Medical Center has access to numerous clinical investigations designed to increase survival and improve the quality of life of patients with cancer.
All patients involved in clinical trials have access to standard of care treatment with or without the new treatment based on randomized schedules. Our Center’s dedicated team of experienced research staff helps physicians and their patients by navigating the trial activities, submitting the data, and working with the trial sponsors. Currently, Denis Fitzgerald, M.D., and Richard Scher, D.O., act as principal investigators for medical studies, and Nathan Kaufman, M.D., and Adnan Danish, M.D., act as principal investigators for radiation therapy studies. Family Risk Assessment Program
Today, people are very aware that there is a hereditary risk for many types of cancers. Our Family Risk Assessment Program provides our community with a resource to help them better identify their risk and, in some cases, take corrective action at a young age. Our certified genetic counselor meets with individuals to provide an initial consultation, coordinate lab work, and review the results of the testing with the patient. This service requires a physician referral and is covered by most insurance plans.
Hospice Care
Research has shown that hospice care at home helps a family as a whole. However, there are occasions when the hospital setting is beneficial. At the Booker Cancer Center our trained and caring clinicians help with spiritual services and religious needs, 24-hour care or on-call care, respite care, and bereavement support.
Our Promise: We Treat People and Their Cancer
Our team understands that each patient’s fight against cancer is unique, so they do their very best to arm the patient and family with the physical and emotional ammunition they need to fight the disease. That is why we offer a number of additional and customizable services for patients and their families. Our Family Risk Assessment Program, dietary and social work programs, counseling for family and caregivers, support groups, private rooms, and accommodations for family members are brought together by a treatment team with one goal in mind – developing a treatment program that’s right for our patients and their loved ones.
