The Stroke Program

Riverview Medical Center is home to a state designated primary stroke center. This designation, from the Department of Health and Senior Services, is bestowed on only the most advanced stroke programs in the state.

When it comes to stroke, minutes count. Time lost is brain lost. According to the American Stroke Association, each year approximately 700,000 people suffer a stroke – 500,000 are first attacks and 200,000 are recurrent. According to a local health study conducted by PRC (Professional Research Consultants) prevalence of stroke in Monmouth County is concurrent with the national findings. Therefore, having a primary stroke center within the community can truly be a life-saver.

At Riverview Medical Center, our Acute Stroke Team is available to rapidly respond to, assess, and treat stroke emergencies – 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. In many cases, t-PA or "Clot Busters" can be administered to dissolve the clots that are keeping blood from flowing to the brain but it must be administered within a three-hour window. Our team is able to respond.

The stroke center has been continually recognized and accredited by third part organizations including CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), the American Heart Association, the Joint Commission, and now the Department of Health and Senior Services. It is a true testament to the work that the stroke team does each and every day, with each and every patient – they consistently deliver exceptional care.
