About General Radiology at Riverview Medical Center
Radiology uses radioactive substances, electromagnetic radiation, and sound waves to create images of the body that allow for the diagnosis of a number diseases and conditions, so that physicians can create the best treatment plan.
What are the different types of general radiologic procedures available to me?
- X-ray – computerized X-ray equipment produce digital images in place of film, which produces a more detailed study of the body. X-rays are most commonly used for taking images of bones to examine injury or diagnose tumors, and are often used for visualization of the urinary and gastrointestinal systems.
- Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) – obtains X-ray images of the urinary tract system (kidneys, ureters, and bladder). IVP may be used to detect kidney tumors, identify blockage or obstruction of the normal flow of urine, detect kidney or bladder stones, identify enlarged prostate glands, or detect injuries to the urinary tract.
- Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Series – commonly called a GI Series, this procedure obtains X-ray images of the gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, and small intestine). GI series are often used to diagnose structural or functional abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract to identify conditions such as: ulcers, GERD, inflammation or infection, benign tumors, cancers, structural problems, hiatal hernias, dysphagia, difficulty moving food through the esophagus, chest or abdominal pain, unexplained vomiting or indigestion, or bloody bowel movements.
- Barium Enema – examines the large bowel (part of the intestines) with the use of a fluoroscope. During this procedure, images are made visible on x-ray film so certain areas of the body will be highlighted to produce clearer images. Barium Enema is used to diagnose disorders of the intestine and rectum including colonic tumors, polyps, diverticula, and anatomical abnormalities.
For your convenience Riverview accepts walk-ins for standard X-rays.
