Swallowing and Esophageal Disorder Screenings
Esophageal disorders, including those involving swallowing disorders such as esophagitis, currently affect more than 15 million Americans. Sufferers find temporary relief from over-the-counter medicines and lifestyle changes, however esophageal disorders may be chronic concerns that can lead to more serious conditions. Esophageal disorders can be treated if detected early, before long-term damage occurs.
GERD
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, known as GERD or acid reflux, is a chronic digestive disease in which acid and bile flow back from the stomach and into the esophagus. The long term effects of GERD can cause damage to the lining of the esophagus and lead to more serious complications including Barrett’s Esophagus or cancer.
Screening and Treatment
Riverview offers a dedicated multi-disciplinary team to diagnose and treat patients with swallowing and esophageal disorders. Riverview’s team of gastroenterologists, radiologists, pathologists, and thoracic surgeons working with the Medical Day Stay Unit use enhanced technology to aid in diagnosing patients with esophageal and swallowing disorders. Thanks to new innovative technology and equipment, the expert physicians at Riverview are able to diagnose and treat more patients with esophageal disorders than ever before.
Riverview’s diagnostic PH and manometry studies can assist in finding of esophageal motility disorders as well as GERD. These swallowing disorders may manifest as heartburn, choking on food, sensation of “lump in the throat,” pain or inability to swallow food or liquids. The root cause of these issues may be caused by nerve or muscle problems, head and neck injuries, cancer, or stroke.
