Stroke Program
About Our Stroke Program
When it comes to treating a stroke, minutes count. Time lost is brain lost, which makes education about the signs of stroke and what you can do to reduce or prevent stroke important for everyone.
Riverview Medical Center is home to one of Hackensack Meridian Health’s five nationally-accredited Primary Stroke Centers, with access to the Hackensack Meridian Health Transfer Center, connecting you to the region’s only Stroke Rescue Center at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Our center was also named a Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Stroke by Healthgrades in 2020.
No matter where you are in Monmouth or Ocean counties, you are just minutes from the advanced stroke care of Hackensack Meridian Health Neuroscience.
Our Acute Stroke Team comprised of neurologists, Magnet-recognized nationally certified nurses, and radiologists, is available to rapidly respond to, assess, and treat stroke emergencies – 24 hours a day, 7-days-a-week, 365 days of the year. In many cases, t-PA, or “clot busters” can be administered to dissolve the clots that are keeping blood from flowing to the brain, but it must be administered within a three-hour window. Our team is able to respond.
The stroke center has been continually recognized and accredited by third part organizations including CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), the American Heart Association, the Joint Commission, and now the Department of Health and Senior Services. It is a true testament to the work that the stroke team does each and every day, with each and every patient – they consistently deliver exceptional care.

Rehabilitation: The Full Continuum of Care
Riverview is also home to Riverview Rehabilitation Center, the only acute rehabilitation center in Monmouth County that is CARF-accredited (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) for treating stroke patients, to help meet their unique and specialized needs and get them back to their daily activities faster.
Stroke recovery often continues beyond the inpatient setting. When you become a member of our family, you can feel comforted that the excellent care you received as an inpatient will extend to your outpatient needs as well, with access to comprehensive outpatient and sub-acute rehabilitation services through Hackensack Meridian Health or in your home.
