Minimally Invasive Surgery
When it comes to surgery, bigger is not necessarily better.
Health care has changed tremendously over recent years, particularly in the area of surgery. Advances in health care continue to give patients more options when it comes to surgery including many minimally invasive ones.
Why Minimally Invasive?
Many procedures that once required large incisions can now be completed with just a few incisions, providing patients with numerous advantages including less pain, smaller scars, and a quicker road to recovery.
There are a variety of different terms used to describe minimally invasive surgeries, such as arthroscopic, robotic, keyhole, and laparoscopic surgery.
Minimally invasive procedures are completed using specialized equipment to reduce the damage of human tissue. In most procedures, a surgeon will make several small incisions (less than an inch) and inserts thin tubes called trocars. A miniature camera (usually a laparoscope or an endoscope) is then placed through one of the trocars so the surgical team can view the procedure as a magnified image on the video monitors in the operating room. Specialized instruments are then placed through the other trocar to perform the procedure and the removal and repair of diseased organs or worn out body parts.
